The mission of the Department of Genetics is to promote excellence in education and research in the areas of genetics.

Situated on the Busch Campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ, the Department of Genetics was established in 1997 within the new Division of Life Sciences. The first chair was Dr. Jay Tischfield (1997-2010) who was succeeded by Dr. Linda Brzustowicz in 2010. There are more than 29 faculty members in the Department, with a wide range of expertise in genetics and microbiology, who are located in the Nelson Biological Laboratories, the Life Sciences Building (Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey), and the Waksman Institute on the Busch Campus.
