Description:

The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the genetic counseling career. Students will be placed at a local Genetic Counseling clinic to shadow a genetic counselor for one semester. During the semester, the student is expected to spend 8-9 hours a week at the rotation plus meet weekly with course director (attendance is mandatory). Tuesdays and Thursdays are the preferred days at the clinic but Mondays are also possible (Wednesdays and Fridays are NOT typically good days). Course grade will be based on 1) Case presentation to Genetic Counseling group 2) ten Genetic Counseling case summary logs, and 3) evaluation by the clinical supervisor.

Note: This course counts as 3 research credits for the Genetics major and can only be taken once. The other three required research credits may be fulfilled with a related Advanced Independent Study Project or a 3 credit research project with a faculty member or in the Rutgers University Cell and DNA Repository (RUCDR). This course is required for the Genetic Counseling Certificate Program.
