Aishee picMajor: Genetics

Graduation Year: 2020

How did you decide on your major?

In high school I loved my biology classes; I especially loved the unit on DNA and Mendelian Genetics. I found it super interesting to learn about how your genes can affect your traits or cause different disorders. When I learned that there was a genetics major at Rutgers I knew that it would be a great choice for me.

What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?

What appeals the most about genetics is the focus placed on research. I love that I can directly apply what I learn in my genetics classes to my work in the lab. I get to see how useful the techniques we learn about are in answering interesting questions and solving real problems.

Do you have a favorite class/professor within your major?

Currently I’m taking developmental genetics. This class has taught me so much about different techniques and methods used to perform research. I love being able to listen to talks or read articles and see how what we’re learning is applied in the lab.

What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?

Since my lab is a computational genetics lab, I had to learn how to code and use different computer programs. Taking an introductory computer science course and working in the lab made me realize that I enjoy coding and I love that I can combine two different fields (genetics and computer science) to work on research project.

What are your other Rutgers activities?

I am currently serving as treasurer of Rutgers Rotaract Club, and I am philanthropy chair of Honors College Service Assembly. I am also part of Rutgers Ballroom and Rutgers Salsa Club.

What are your plans following graduation?

I will be attending medical school through the BA/MD program with Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
