Major: Genetics (possible political science minor)
Graduation Year: 2020
How did you decide on your major?
I always knew I was interested in the life science fields, and after seeing genetics applied, and making a difference in a real-life scenario when I worked in a veterinary practice, I knew that this was something that I wanted to do.
What is it about your chosen field (and the department) that appeals to you?
The combination of classroom lectures from leading faculty and hands on learning with those same professors is something I love. Being able to apply what you have learned makes a huge difference and doing it via actual scientific research is a fantastic opportunity I would not have so much access to in the UK.
Do you have a favorite class/professor within your major?
I thoroughly enjoyed developmental genetics with Dr. Andrew Singson, however my favorite professor is Dr. Tetsuya Nakamura. As the PI of the lab I work in I have learned a lot about all aspects of scientific process and being here to help set up his lab at RU Is a phenomenal experience.
What are your favorite academic experiences outside of your major?
I really enjoyed Extinction with Dr. Rob Scott as it was my first exposure to scientific literature and was a fantastic introductory class to my time at Rutgers, I would advocate that all incoming freshmen take it. I also have really enjoyed my political science courses that I have taken this semester, as they have begun to open my mind to the idea of the ways that a scientist can influence government and the potential that may hold for someone like me.
What are your other Rutgers activities?
I am a part of the Association of Undergraduate Geneticists, Rutgers University Filipino Martial Arts (I am the clubs event coordinator and have become a 3x world champion). I have also used my connections via my research lab to spend time in the collections of the Natural History Museum, London and the AMNH in NYC to study fossils as an extra activity. I have also worked in the international admissions office.
What are your plans following graduation?
My plans following graduation are to (hopefully!) get into a PHD program and continue my scientific career in evolutionary and developmental biology.
