Abstract: Natural selection is a powerful force in generating adaptive solutions and diversity, yet a variety of factors constrain this evolutionary potential. I will be exploring two case studies of functional and selective constraints in microbial evolution. In the first, I will experimentally explore what, if any, selective barriers exist preventing horizontal gene transfer in bacteria. In the latter half, I will decompose the functional genetic constraints on gene expression in cis- and trans-regulatory elements of a microbial system that may affect the outcomes of selection for novel phenotypes.
