"Neurons Put Out the Trash: A Novel Facet of Proteostasis and Mitochondrial Quality Control”

Protein aggregation and mitochondrial dysfunction are critical problems in aging and neurodegenerative disease. Confounding the problem, aggregates and mitochondria can spread to neighboring cells, which can impair function of the receiving cell and promote disease spread. We found that C. elegans neurons can collect and hand off trash to neighboring cells and I will present our work on the dissection of the trash extrusion mechanism, which we speculate might be analogous to mechanisms of transfer operative in human brain.
