Major: Genetics

Graduation Year: 2023

How did you decide on your major?

Aspiring to pursue a healthcare career, I recognized that majoring in Genetics would provide me with a comprehensive understanding of the foundations of human life, equipping me with knowledge that would help me excel in my future endeavors. Through my exploration, I quickly discovered that Genetics is a rapidly advancing field, offering cutting-edge developments and diverse career opportunities. Moreover, I sought to engage in undergraduate research, and the Genetics major at Rutgers presented a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the innovative research being conducted within the department.

What did you like most about it?

One of the most rewarding aspects of the Genetics major was the opportunity to work as a Research Assistant under the mentorship of Dr. Amrik Sahota, where I conducted research on the genetic disorder, cystinuria. Dr. Sahota has been an exceptional mentor, providing invaluable guidance as he introduced me to the field of research and supported my academic and professional growth. This experience transformed my approach to problem-solving and critical thinking, significantly enriching my perspective.

I also enjoyed taking the course Effective Communication Skills in Genetics with Dr. Maureen Barr, who was instrumental in helping me refine my presentation skills and master the art of effectively communicating research findings to diverse audiences. This course boosted my confidence in delivering both oral and poster presentations, leaving me well-equipped to present my work in future professional settings.

Valdez 2What is your current position, what do you, and what do you enjoy most about it?

I am currently working as an Emergency Medicine Scribe where I accurately document pertinent information during patient-physician interactions in real-time and enter them into a physician note thereby optimizing clinician efficiency. Through this role, I have developed a deeper understanding of the complexities of the healthcare system and the medical decision-making processes while gaining exposure to a myriad of cases and procedures. I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population and gained insights into the various health barriers faced by underserved patients. Contributing to the reduction of health disparities in my community by providing support to clinicians has been the most meaningful aspect of my job.

What was your first job after Rutgers and how did you get it?

My first job after graduating from Rutgers is my current role as an Emergency Medicine Scribe. I am also an incoming first-year medical student at New Jersey Medical School. My experiences as a research assistant, mentor, and tutor at Rutgers were pivotal in securing my scribing position and played a crucial role in enhancing key skills that have been fundamental to my success as a scribe. These opportunities provided valuable insights and experiences that not only prepared me for my current role but also established a strong foundation for my future success in medical school.

Looking back, what classes or experiences at Rutgers would you point to as contributing to your successes?

I attribute my success to the enriching experiences I acquired as an Aresty Research Assistant in the Genetics Department, a Paul Robeson Success Institute Mentor, and a tutor for first-generation college students. Conducting research and presenting my findings at symposiums honed my critical thinking and communication abilities while instilling meticulous attention to detail—skills I rely on daily as a medical scribe. Mentoring and tutoring allowed me to further develop my leadership and problem-solving skills. Together, these experiences have shaped my journey and solidified my commitment to pursue a career in medicine. Additionally, courses offered by the Genetics Department, such as Evolutionary Medicine and Introduction to Cancer were profoundly inspiring and expanded my knowledge, enabling me to excel in my current position.
